Mural Design for Perth College
It's not often a project like this one comes along where Design and Art worlds get to collide on quite such a 'grand scale'.
Not only was this an opportunity to inject a little stimulation for the imaginations of the students of Perth College, but a really lovely highlight of the story behind the mural, is that it emerged from a collaboration with the Year 9 art class, who initially provided inspiration through some of their own work which was incorporated into the final artwork.
The Perth College pool is surrounded by intense red brick and it was decided that commissioning a mural might help break up some of this, whilst adding interest and vibrancy to the area.
Some of the Year 9 Art students took a series of amateur underwater photos of themselves, and illustrated a series of hand-drawn castles as part of the initial stage of this project.
The challenge was then given to me, to take these drawings and digital images and to use them to form the foundation of this 23 metre artwork.
Two other studios were asked to put forward the visual proposals ... AW Studio's concept was chosen ... and here is the result.
There was nothing bridging the two completely different styles of the hand drawn illustrations with the photography of the girls ... so a fantasy underwater world was created by introducing a dynamic hand drawn illustration suggesting elaborate seaweed, with just hints of some scales of a gigantic underwater creature.
Being positioned in sight of the art department, I also thought it would be nice to introduce the texture of giant paint strokes which would blend into the textures of the water, adding another surreal element to the fantasy world.
A series of the girls in the photos were converted into a more illustrative look helping to merge the styles together and to ensure the integrity of the images would look interesting even at close proximity.
A feature wall that picks up on the colours of the surroundings at a glance. It seems to be rising out of the pool with a kaleidoscope of activity.
At a closer look, the mural becomes a window into a dreamlike, surreal waterscape stirring the imagination. The images of the girls woven into the surreal elements, chosen specifically to illustrate the underlying theme of friendships and fun.
